China is one of Volkswagen’s key production sites.
In fact, the Volkswagen Group has three joint ventures in China, which are SAIC VOLKSWAGEN Automotive Limited Company (SAIC VOLKSWAGEN), FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Limited Company (FAW-Volkswagen), and JAC Volkswagen Automotive Limited Company.
Back in 2017, Volkswagen signed a joint venture agreement with the Chinese automaker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp., Ltd. (JAC). The joint venture is to focus on research and development, production, and marketing of new energy vehicles and mobility services with an initial term of 25 years.
Volkswagen Group China has established 33 plants in Shanghai, Changchun, Dalian, Nanjing, Yizheng, Chengdu, Foshan, Ningbo, Changsha, Urumqi, Hefei, and Tianjin to manufacture vehicles and components in China. By the end of October 2019, Volkswagen Group China had more than 100,000 employees in China, including those of the joint ventures. China is also Volkswagen’s major market, accounting for 40 percent of its global sales.
But as we mentioned before, Volkswagen’s branch in China said it has closed down two areas of production: a plant it jointly runs with FAW Group in the city of Tianjin, as well as a component factory.
